hunting: am i doing it right?
step 1: find an advertisement for a job.
step 2: send an email [or fax when available] with cover letter and resume.
step 3: after a few days [usually 3 or 4 depending on my level of excitement], call to follow up. to make sure they received info. to ask if the position has been filled.
step 4: cry when they either don’t answer and never call back even when you leave a message or tell you the position has been filled.
are follow up phone calls a good idea or are they just annoying?
Follow up calls are always a good idea. I wouldn’t have my current job if hadn’t followed up. I called after I sent in my resume and that got me an interview. A follow up after that got me a return visit. And a follow up call after that got me the job. In my opinion, follow up calls show persistence and initiative.
I know all the rejection is disheartening, but look at it this way: the people who find your persistence annoying are probably not people you want to be working for in the first place.
Keep it up and Good Luck!

Follow up phone calls are good, especially if it is a desirable position, or if the company or business might have other interesting job openings soon. Your persistence might make them remember you, if you had a memorable and applicable resumé.

Good idea. Also a good idea? Having a fantastic resume. I spend A LOT of time looking at resumes, and it’s amazing how little effort some people put into such an obviously important thing. Cover letters too. There’s def. an art to the cover letter.

a follow-up call would only be annoying if they have no intention of hiring you; if that’s the case, fuck them anyways.

Sounds good to me.. as far as the follow up call, some people very specifically say NOT to call, and in that case, make sure you don’t. Also, when you do call to follow up, make it brief. Nothing is worse than a 5 minute long voicemail. Good luck!!

Pester them. Otherwise they forget about you or your resume gets lost in a stack of papers. People are busy.

I’ve had the same concern. Ppl get so many submissions that if everyone followed up it would be really annoying. i usually wait like a week, then ask if they recieved my application and if they need any more information. What type of jobs you after?

You need to find a balance, seem eager but not desperate. I’d call again after the follow up call, maybe a few days?
