From the liner notes:
It would be a mistake to relegate Lionel Hampton to the past. By continually surrounding himself with younger musicians, this hip octogenarian refuses to be labeled a relic. These sessions, recorded almost 60 years after Hamp’s debut on records, are a perfect case in point. His stellar accompanists provide a fascinating contemporary backdrop for Hampton’s ever-stimulating solo flights.
The title track, “Mostly Blues,” is a blues both in structure and feeling, with guitarist Beck showing he has plenty of the latter. His opening choruses are the musical embodiment of soul. Scott is up next and makes the most of his one chorus; his rumbling bass notes are reminiscent of the late Eddie Costa. Hamp preaches the blues gospel, while Beck and Scott interject the musical “amens” wherever appropriate.
Hamp was considered a vibraphone virtuoso. Steve and I love jazz, so there will undoubtedly be a few more of these popping up on the infinite playlist.
